Compress video — common questions

How much smaller will my video get?

It depends on the source. The three levels target 500kbps, 1Mbps and 2Mbps, so a phone recording at 20Mbps shrinks dramatically, while an already-compressed download may barely change. The summary reports the real figure once it finishes.

Why is my compressed file larger than the original?

Because the original was already more efficient than the level you chose. The tool tells you when this happens rather than handing back a bigger file quietly — pick a lower level, or keep what you have.

Which browsers work?

Chrome and Edge handle the widest range of codecs, with Firefox and Safari covering common MP4 files. Compression uses WebCodecs, your browser’s built-in encoder, so support follows the browser rather than this page. Unsupported files are reported, not failed silently.

Is there a watermark or a length limit?

Neither. The video is processed locally, so there is nothing to pay for and no reason to brand the output. Long videos take longer because every frame is re-encoded on your machine.
